I think there's room to mock left or right. At the end of the day, they're all the same incompetent career politicians. It's just annoying to see the same lazy targets being hit by the established trendy lefty comics. Who's the posh twat with a massive forehead? Brigstork? What a complete cunt he is, there's no credibility at all to his forced left-wing ranting.

I agree. Marcus Brigstock is a cunt. I caught him mocking posh people called William/Willem on some panel show. What a fucking prick.
Where's ronseal? He does some good non-left of centre comedy. Well we should say he does good comedy. That's the only kind I like.
And Aarghgarry.

Yeah! I saw that! How can someone called 'Marcus' credibly attack someone else for having a posh name? The bell-end organises a comedy festival in a French ski resort, FFS.

I saw a Marcus Brigstocke stand-up show a few years ago. There was a lot of funny stuff in it but he did piss me off when he started his leftie ranting. Which maybe suggests that you shouldn't be left-leaning or right-leaning comic - just take the piss out of anyone and anything.
I love the thought of you catching him mocking posh-people Golgo. I hope you punished him suitably!

"Right" or "left" doesn't matter, the problem is people blindly believing what they're told, accepting whatever they're spoon-fed, and not thinking for themselves.
So I've heard anyway.

broadly along the lines of an earlier comment here, there' is also something in the relative attractiveness of the stereotypical right/left targets; negative Right wing behaviour/values to attack tend to be ridiculous, hence colourful (racism, the upper class, pomposity etc) whereas those on the Left tend to be depressing and grey (nanny state, parasitism etc). would be interesting to see what anti-Establishment humour came out of the old Eastern bloc at the time. don't expect it was particulary rib-cracking (unlike the Stasi's interrogation sessions)
what was that semi-improvised family sitcom with whatsisname as a teacher with three awful kids? that embedded quite a bit of Right wing humour via the little girl - "Mummy, why is it only Muslims who blow up planes?"

Outnumbered?

Eastern bloc jokes:
Why are you digging a hole and your comrade filling it?
Because it's Ivan's day off - He plants the trees.Wasn't there famously an Eastern Bloc joke about a man trying to smuggle an elephant by disguising it as a sandwich?

Hooray! Someone has found me a right wing comedian! With good lines! The little girl in Outnumbered! A clear heir to the Jim Davidson throne, and I can also detect a definite Bernard Manning influence. Any more?

Waylandsmithy:
The only difference between the BBC and a state broadcaster is that the BBC can set their own agenda.
Here's where I disagree with you. I see no difference at all between the BBC and a "state broadcaster". I think the BBC reflects more often than not the views of the British civil service and its governance is neck-deep in former high level Sir Humphreys.
Posted 10 months ago # -
Bollocks, JohnA. State broadcaster, my arse. I don't think any government, Tory, Labour or Coalition has trusted the BBC over the last 30 years.
And fucking ironic that you use the idiom of a BBC political satire of civil service/government to criticise it.
And I think the BBC is ace. Watched a programme about Easy Listening music last night on BBC4, never having wanted to see such a programme, but found it really interesting.
And the Olympics were brill. 24 channels popped out of nowhere.
Oh, and Radio 4.
Seriously, I talk to people all over the world who admire the BBC. All the fucking time.
Posted 10 months ago # -
I think the BBC is a pretty good broadcaster in some areas as well, but it is very much State-controlled.
The Olympics were brill - so what? They were only broadcast by the BBC not controlled by them.
You find Easy listening nice - so what? You've just lost your last vestiges of rhythm and tone - but that's not because the BBC isn't State controlled
Labour, Conservative and Liberal don't trust the BBC - so what? None of the political parties represent the British State.
The BBC's output is heavily and overwhelmingly slanted to support of the British Monarchy and to protect the interests and advance the shibboleths of the Civil Service. Any criticism of those institutions is marginalized and ridiculed when it isn't actively censored
Admiration of the BBC by foreigners doesn't change the fact that it is State-controlled.

Shibboleths schmibboleths.
You think the fucking Queen controls the BBC?
That's your theory?
The same BBC that gave you Frankie "The Queen's so old her pussy is haunted" Boyle?
You're a fucking fruit cake.Fact is, however it gets here, it's the best broadcaster ever.
Whining about how it doesn't make sense, isn't under your direct control jjust makes you look like a cock-smoking fuck-wit.
The extra "j" in "just" stands for "jerk-off" which is what you are.

"Duke Togo"
You think the fucking Queen controls the BBC?
Nope.
That's your theory?
Nope.
The same BBC that gave you Frankie "The Queen's so old her pussy is haunted" Boyle?
Did the BBC give me Frankie Boyle? Nope. I remember "Not the Nine O'Clock News" attacking the Royal Family, and makes no difference because the Royal Family doesn't control the BBC.
You're a fucking fruit cake.
No that would be you. You present no facts, just personal abuse and a preference for easy listening on Radio 4.
Fact is, however it gets here, it's the best broadcaster ever.
Never mind the provenance, feel the quality of its easy listening of Radio 4? It somehow reminds me of Chinese TV - how many Chinese think its the best in the world? Who am I to disagree with a billion people?
Whining about how it doesn't make sense, isn't under your direct control jjust makes you look like a cock-smoking fuck-wit.
Impressive. None of the arguments I've actually used get flung at me as if I actually made any of those preposterous claims. English clearly isn't your first language.
The extra "j" in "just" stands for "jerk-off" which is what you are.
Hold on a second. The Duke of Edinburgh is in hospital with fuck-all to do and suddenly a "Duke Togo" appears and posts random rants on a message board.
Or is it just another incarnation of Saltire?

Well I haven't the advantage of a wide, scientifically conducted, properly controlled, survey to hand, but what I have seen around the world from my travels, is that the BBC is highly regarded. To assert that it is the "State Broadcaster" is plainly absurd.
And as to bias it often does the opposite - providing "balanced views" when there is in fact no balance in the real world - e.g. climate change - 15,000 climate scientists in agreement - but every time one of them appears they wheel out Nigel Lawson or some other mad, evidence-free idealogue to provide "a balanced argument". It's like having a report on the latest geo-synchronous satellite launch having a scientist and a member of the Flat Earth Society.Posted 10 months ago # -
Sorry Al, but that was too obvious a troll. You've got to learn that with trolling less is definitely more.

And your reply JohnA, turns out to be a splendid piece of narcissism. I refer you to Simon, C. (1973).
Posted 10 months ago # -
Ahem, the BBC is state-owned, so is the TV in Zimbabwe. I think we can tell the difference can't we? The liberal 'bias' in the BBC comes down to the absence of a crazed right-wing billionaire proprietor setting the tone, giving free rein to journalists who generally tend to be liberal-left and cynical. In short, it isn't biased at all.
Posted 10 months ago # -
Well said....and in the interests of balance, a comment from a raving right-wing nutter to follow.
Posted 10 months ago # -
I liked it before when it was getting ranty.
Fact is, Nick Robinson is allegedly a big Tory boy and he leaves long pauses before the last bit of his sentences..................just like Clarkson.
Posted 10 months ago # -
So did I but a psychotic nutter came to the party. The BBC is state-owned and its output on constitutional matters, environmentalism is heavily influenced by the Civil Service.
It still makes cracking comedies as well as science and nature documentaries.

All very well, but where was it when the Come Dine With Me franchise came up, huh? Missed the boat there didn't you, Auntie Beeb!

Ah Golgo, There you are.
Thanks for your kind words.
Have you noticed how no-one ever complains that the BBC is too right wing? What does that tell us?
I agree with you about Marcus Brigstocke.
How he has the neck to sneer at 'posh' people when his name is Marcus, he's never had a proper job and he went straight from university into a cushy life at the BBC, where his older brother just happens to be a producer, I will never know.
The BBC is a sort of left wing Bullingdon Club, where ethnic minorities and the working classes are limited to supporting roles as cleaners, security guards and childrens TV presenters.
To be fair, I think Jeremy Clarkson is a bit right wing. I'm not mad on cars though.

What a lovely thread!
Go to America for a bit, and after day one you'd die for the BBC.
Trust me.
