Twenty nine gold medals, a practically flawless games, and Australia finishing in ignominy and recrimination in tenth place. It was almost too good to be true - Unfortunately it was. A series of leaked documents from some ministry or other reveals the astonishing truth. Britain never actually won the bid for the 2012 Olympics, and the last 7 years have been a sham. According to the documents, several thousand actors were hired to portray foreign athletes in what the unimaginative are now referring to as the "Fauxlimpics". There had initially been plans in place to engineer a win for Team GB in the Men's football, but it was decided that allowing the team to go out in the quarter finals on penalties had a convincing ring of truth about it.
The release of the documents has been the cause of much amusement abroad, not least from Australia. This was short lived however, when the UN secretary general stepped in to point out to them that they were mistaken in their assumption that a country had to choose between sport and culture.
An expected backlash against all major political partes from the British public has yet to occur for several reasons. The overwhelming feelgood factor still present in the country, a collective sense of embarrassment at having been hoodwinked on such a massive scale, and an unwillingness to spoil ongoing preparations for the World Cup in 2014.
