Three weeks after stating that he and his establishment Chick-fil-A was “guilty as charged” of supporting the biblically based marriage of one man and one woman, Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy revealed his homosexuality after being found by media at his local USA Gay meeting with his boyfriend Bob Mazzuca.
“For those shocked, I affirm that I have been gay my whole life. My family would never have tolerated that though, and after much prayer, I convinced myself the straight life was the right path. I now still believe in Biblical marriage, but I also believe that He gave us the freedom to love whomever He sent for us. And, during my military service, I met Bob and knew at once that he was the one God put on Earth for me,” said a teary eyed Dan in an interview.
Experts say say incidents of homophobes revealing later in their life that they were gay all along is relatively common. For example, evangelical preacher Ted Haggard was caught in a 2006 sex scandal, later joining the Episcopal Church after affirming his sexual preference, explaining, “I am no longer the man many have long thought me as, but I am now the man I have always thought myself as, and I hope all of you can still have respect for me and my decision”
However, the experts also warn against criticism of those who decided to come out. "We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat. Homophobia is not a laughing matter,” says Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester.
Protesters of both anti-gay and pro-gay groups immediately gathered and clashed at Chick-fil-A Sunday, despite the fact that the chain closes Sundays.
“When will the nation learn that they need to reject their sinful homosexual ways, repent, and be saved by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?” asks a Baptist pastor at the protest, apparently in response to the pro-gay protesters’ (and now pro Chick-fil-A) risqué gay behaviour at the protest.
