I was expecting it to be shite. It wasn't. It was excellent.

When it started with Glastonbury Tor on stage, I thought it could only go downhill rapidly (pun unintentional, but WTF), and would have given up when the folk singing started. But I was persuaded (ie, forced) to continue watching, and the rest was great. Liked HM's bizarre cameo of Oneself, would love to know how she was talked into that.
Turned off when Paul McCartney appeared, obviously.

Agreed. Righteous.

Fell asleep when the atheletes came in. Woke up later and they were still on C so back to sleep. Saw the end on iPlayer this am. Glad I missed P McC. Loved the skydiving queen, which other country would, makes you proud, etc.

I expected to hate it and only watched it to see what Danny Boyle would do - I loved it! Only Danny Boyle could pull off James Bond, a parachuting Queen and Mary Poppins in one show!
Not sure what some of the non-Brits would make of it though! But PLEASE no more Paul McCartney - ANYWHERE!

I was also expecting it to be a bore, but really enjoyed it.
Tantamount!

Even Beckham fitted in well.

I got to see the end of 'Quantum of Solace' (on another channel) for the first time, so it wasn't an altogether wasted evening.
Thought the theatrical stuff was quite impressive, but the manic trawl through decades of popular music left me somewhat stunned and mrs 4fun, who can normally manage most things, went for the early bath. Flicking back & forth from Q.o.S. meant I missed not only the full majesty of 'lighting the bar-b-q' but also Television X 10 minute freeview.

But why Trevor Nelson?

I thought it was brilliant. Tuned in prepared to be unimpressed after the bus and jimmy page/leona lewis in 2008.
However, totally brilliant I thought, so many of the aspects highlighted (industrial revolution, cosmopolitan ethnicity, armed forces, shakespeare, music, acting, NHS+Great Ormond St and the Web inventor- made me genuinely proud to be British.

Hate to say it, but it was brilliant. Loved it.
Apart from Paul of course.

I knew that I could flush you out in the end, Scroat.

I can't listen to Hey Jude without launching into that Fry & Laurie sketch where Hugh Laurie sounds like he's on helium and Fry has a voice deeper than a foghorn. But all in all, very good.

I'm not sure whether Sirpaul's voice improved towards the end, the crowd joining in on the 'Nah, nah, nah, na-na-na-nah Hey Jude'drowned him out or my ears had just become anaesthetised to the pain.

I must admit I enjoyed the celebration of our heritage but it failed to make reference to what made this wonderful nation so wealthy and powerful: the slave trade.
Clearly an oversight or it may feature in closing ceremony.Posted 9 months ago # -
Good point ted. There must have been at least some, out of the thousands of volunteers, willing to be chained up and whipped.

I'm free for the final day, if it helps

Are they saving a slave trade intro for the Commonwealth Games?

The traditional British pastimes of queuing and rioting (not necessarily unconnected, in my view) were also absent. The slave trade was nodded to, albeit ironically and deliberately - there was a black mill owner/industrial boss in his suit and topper.
The pop music bit was rubbish, I could have done a better mix tape, and Pauls voice has deffo gorn. The athletes stroll went on for far too long.
On the whole, though, arise Sir Danny. Or Susan. Or Frankie. Or Law (did you see what I did there)

I personally loved the whole entry ceremony. It was a totally different approach and I think that is what stands Britain for.
