A leading sports presenter at this weekend’s athletics Grand Prix in London may face a BBC professional conduct enquiry, after asking an athlete a question that was neither trite nor predictable.
John Inverdale, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was apparently shocked into the on-air blunder after an unexpectedly straightforward answer from a sportsman to his previous question. Inverdale’s colleague, the chubby Brendon Foster (himself a former European record holder at both 5000 Metres and Competitive Pie Eating), is optimistic about the outcome of the enquiry however. “Fortunately John wasn’t in camera shot and the sound-recordist had dozed off some minutes earlier so there may not be a case to answer.”
Seasoned observers confirm that Inverdale has a body of banal work to rival anyone else in the business. “He’d warmed up well for the gruelling Olympic year with an impressive spell at Wimbledon” says Foster “No former tennis champion was spared a smarmy ‘Can Andy do it?’. And that’s got to count for something surely.”
