Got some tropical fish today.

Me: I'd like two Pakistani loaches, please.
Pet Shop Chap: You can't say that! We call them Yo-Yo loaches.
Me: Why?
PSC: Pakistani loaches is racist.
Me: But they're loaches and they're from Pakistan.
PSC: That is racist, you can't call things Pakistani.
Me: Even if they're from Pakistan?
PSC: It's just wrong, you're wrong. You're so wrong!
Me: If they were from France could I call them French loaches?
PSC: Well yeah, obviously cos that's not racist.

I'll ask for a definitive answer from the guy I sit next to at work. I'm not sure he's from Pakistan, and I don't want to use the word 'pakistani', so I'll just ask him if they have fish where he comes from, and that should clear the matter up.

An Indian friend used to be insulted on the street sometimes by being called "Paki". He says he was more offended by the association with Pakistan than the racism.

Well, I wouldn't want to be called French, or worse Welsh.
