Britain gained a surprise gold medal in the men’s one hundred metre final . Jamaican Usain Bolt who was expected to easily win was shocked to be beaten and also see his world record smashed by Burt Thomas , a labourer from west London .
Even more incredible Thomas didn’t realise he was in the race till two minutes before . It at this point that the site forman had realised that the lines that define the track lanes for hadn’t been painted . Track officials would not hold up the race , because of the demands of the world wide audience .
So it was left to Thomas with a pot of dulux , a brush , eye protectors , a hard hat and knee pads as demanded by Health and Safety to perform what seem to be an impossible task . And with British pluck and a threat that his tea break wouldn’t happen till he finished ,he set about his task .
Talking to Burt after the race in a smoking zone five miles outside the stadium , I asked what was the worst part of the race ? He took his cigarette out his mouth , looked at the medal .
“Worst part ? Pain barrier innit . Look at that . I caught my hand when I open the tin of paint with a screw driver .”
I then asked him how it feels to have beaten whom is considered the fastest man in the world .
“Well , the first time was fun , but you should have seen his face the second time .”
How did you pass him twice ?
“Well , I had to put down a second coat .”
