Channel 4 has announced details of a groundbreaking new detective series for its Autumn season. Building upon the upsurge in popularity for Scandinavian police shows, “A Fight to the Finnish” (“Som flyttat min Knäckebröd?” in the original Swedish version) tells the story of Martin(a) Olowe-Svensson, a mixed-race transgender private detective with a secret: s/he is also a philatelist.
Davina Wells, a buyer for Channel 4, explained “We wanted a programme which really explores some important issues. The fact that only 37 private detectives in the whole of Scandinavia are openly mixed-race and transgender speaks for itself. This can only be the tip of the iceberg. We hope that Martin(a) will be a role model for all those mixed-race transgender private detectives who don’t yet feel able to be themselves, fearing society’s disapproval.”
The programme joins two other new series starting in October. “The Inexorable Factor” charts the decline back into their original obscurity of twenty “X Factor” participants, while “You Eat What You Are” is said to be the first gourmet cannibalism show on British TV.
