Let's have a thread where we talk about music innit.

I bet all you lot just listen to Genesis and The Smiths. There'll be an XTC fan out there too no doubt.

Magazine and Wire for me.

My new discovery is I Am Am I Who Am I (usually she runs it together as one word, Iamamiwhoami.) A terrible name, I know. But this Swedish electro-pop artist's debut album Kin is actually friggin' awesome. Just listen to the first two tracks (Sever, Drops) alone and you'll find music of real pull, mystery and detail that is also catchy.

Excellent idea Textbook.
My last five purchases of current/recent material have been The Avett Brothers, Martin Simpson, Admiral Fallow, The Low Anthem, Patsy Matheson.
And I still buy CDs because nobody ever got a shag out of browsing through somebody's download collection.
If this place is populated by Genesis/Floyd/Smiths ostriches then I'm out of here.

My CD, vinyl and download collection contains a bit of everything: Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Beyonce, 80s Electro-synth, punk, classical, Otis Redding, Waterboys, Pet Shop Boys, Joe Jackson, Simon and Garfunkel, Led Zep, Moby, etc.

No Smiths, no Floyd, and only a couple of Genesis.

Pet Shop Boys, 80's Gary Numan, Nik Kershaw, Marc Almond, 80's electronic, Snowkitten Studio. Classical - Sissel, Chopin, Opera (Callas, Domingo, Gobbi). Prefer vinyl to CD and don't do MP3.

I got rid of my two Genesis albums quite some while ago.

I thought I was the only living Martin Simpson fan, Gerontius; glad I’m not. Saw him live in Hastings many years ago; a jaw-droppingly good guitarist. Recent listening in the car - T.V. Smith, Muse, Richard Thompson, Dylan, Linkin Park, Jacques Brel. At home, Bach.

I variously favour the works of Busted, Metallica, Take That, Newton Faulkner, Def Leppard, McFly, Robbie Williams, Ocean Colour Scene, Stiff Little Fingers, Pink Fairies, Motorhead, Oasis, Guns and Roses.

On reflection, boy music, subsection shouty, in the main.

I've always been horribly out of date. Faust, Julian Cope, God Speed you! Black Emperor, Magma, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Comus, anything acid folk or kraut rock. For newer bands, I like The Vaccines, Deadmaus, Genticorum, Bellowhead.

I just like bands to sound like they're trying hard and have something to say. Why are there still people making boring music? Seems a waste.

Oh, forgot Stackridge and Ivor Cutler. And Primal Scream.

I've grown fond of Hot Chip. But historically anything by The Fall, X Mal Deutschland, Slowdive, in fact anything "Shoegazey" . And Bronski Beat, obviously. God, there's some shite taste in here...

I don’t listen to an artist once they become popular. If somebody gets into my car and they recognise the Russian gypsy folk/trance hybrid music that I’m listening to then there’s nothing in it for me anymore.

I’ll move on and find another obscure artist that I can play really loud to try and get people to ask me who it is so I can sound all cool and different. Then I’ll use words like ‘juxtaposition’ when talking about it.

Gerontius - Martin Simpson is excellent, up there with Richard Thompson.

On my iPod/iTunes I've got the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Fairport, Steeleye Span, Richard Thompson, Bert Jansch, Bad Company, The Byrds, Chris Wood, lots of obscure acoustic guitarists, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, James Taylor, Isaac Guillory, The Kinks, Joni Mitchell, Paul simon, Simon and Garfunkel, Jonathan Kelly, The Police, Ralph McTell, Suzanne Vega, Tom Petty, The Traveling Wilburys and Crowded House amongst others.

Have never grown tired of listening to Siouxsie, Elvis Costello and The Clash. Sixteen years of Glastonbury Dance Tent stewarding has expanded my horizons to include Chemical Brothers, Roni Size, The Orb and Dreadzone - and also led to my hatred of pretty much all hip-hop and dubstep. Maybe I'm getting old.

Currently listening to Wilco, John Mayer, Alabama Shakes, Jonathan Wilson, Dawes, Laura Marling, Angus & Julia Stone, Kassidy, Father John Misty, Bon Iver and the Black Keys.

As a default I will always revert back to Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, James Taylor, and the Beatles, oh and not forgetting Africa by Toto and More than a feeling by Boston.

Hawkwind, I used to play silver Machine loud in my first car (silver Citroen BX 1600) so as you can see, I've defined 'cool' for quite some time now

Ironduke: space rock is very underrated! Warrior on the Edge of Time is an amazing album, Hawkwind are still brrilliant now. Space is deep.

A former mentor lent me not just his gifts for client communication and clinical acumen, but also his Pink Fairies albums (as I recall, their guitarist set up Motorhead with Lemmy from Hawkwind, so the first Motorhead album On Parole was a mix of the two, containing the marvellous tunes 'I've laid a Chambermaid' and 'Vibrator' ("I'm a va-va-va-va-vibrator, ever-ready all the time; reach for me now, I'm ready and how")

Schoolboy smut plus killer guitar. A perfect combo...

Textbook: I'm going back in my mind to mid-70s when to mention Magma was inevitably met with a blank look followed by, "Who?"

It's a brave man that mentions the "P" word too. Prog (Yes in particular) was always my favourite genre as a lad and still continues to be to this day. But when punk came in you nearly had to go into hiding for a good 20 years before being able to mention it in mixed company again. Though now it seems to be acceptable-ish once more.

Always had a soft spot for Rush too. My fav album being Moving Pictures.
