moot point - I travel the M5 quite often and regularly see one of the overhead signs reading THIS SIGN NOT IN USE
surely the best way to illustrate the fact would be to leave it blank?

That's quite pseudo-philosophical - is a sign that says 'sign not in use' in use or not?
Maybe matrix signs could be used to introduce more philosophical debate into commuting.

I feel sorry for all those old people who drive past those signs saying "tiredness can kill". Very insensitive, but poignant.
