Roy Hodgson has again reiterated that he chose John Terry over Rio Ferdinand for ‘footballing reasons only.’
Speaking in defence of his selection Hodgson said, ‘John Terry is the finest defender in England. I was so impressed with his performance against Napoli. You would have though Deigo Maradonna wasn’t even playing he kept him that quiet.”
The England manager dismissed fears that picking man who has twice been stripped of the English Captaincy could be catastrophic for team moral, “He’s a fantastic leader. Against Barcelona he got sent off as a means to galvanize the team. Now he misses the final for his selflessness.”
Hodgson has no concerns over the court case than Terry faces after the tournament for racial abuse, ‘the only concrete evidence that he did anything wrong is video replays which FIFA has yet to introduce. So a photograph of him lifting the European Championship trophy beside a headline JOHN TERRY RACIST doesn’t worry me. Nor does the fact that I will have chosen a racist over a black man.’
‘Besides Rio just hasn’t gotten the fitness for this kind of schedule,’ continued Hodgson. When many journalists pointed out that Terry had missed more games due to injury Hodgson responded with ‘Shut up,’ and ‘this press conference is over. No wonder Capello left.’
