Chelsea FC joined the clamour of charities claiming that the upper limit on tax relief for donations would kill the club completely.
A spokesman said "for a number of years, Chelsea FC has depended upon the charity and goodwill of a few billionaires. Without their generosity a number of footballers from deprived areas would be denied millions of pounds of salary, and many supporters of other premier league teams have nothing to laugh at. We call on the government to remove this limit".
The government replied "although we recognise the concerns of Chelsea FC, the limit was placed because so of the so called 'charitable gifts' were in fact going to charities of a dubious nature. For example, Manchester City"
