The union that represents all of the UK’s beggars, the Beggared Up Movement (BUM), has today announced they will strike following a ballot that took place in every public toilet last Tuesday. The action will happen over the Easter weekend, with beggars picketing empty shop fronts and setting fire to barrels filled with ‘White Lightning’.
The dispute comes as a growing number of the union’s members are complaining about working conditions. Johnny ‘tattoo face’ Higgins, a beggar with 35 years service told us ‘if you work in an office and you need to pee, you go to the toilet. I know we get a change of underwear every 3 days but it’s not the same’
He also complained about the levels of tolerance expected of him and his colleagues. ‘Our customers treat us with very little respect. Some ignore us, some give us 20p and demand change, and only the other day my colleague, Stan, had a stapler and some magazine articles thrown at him’ Johnny recalled. ‘Fair play to him though, he refused to make a big issue out of it’
