chorus: you never had it in the first place
Now, as a mere browse through any of my posts may show you, my 'funny' wasn't exactly a rampant throbbing V8 supercruiser, more a gentle putt-putting underpowered runabout struggling up an incline.
However, it was definitely there, and now it isn't, and hasn't been for a long time, and I rather miss it.
Anyone else met with fallow months and found their funny return?

I know just how you feel Duke. But spring is springing, the sap is rising and I've only been called a cnut and a boring twat on half of my weak come-back attempts; so everything to play for.

Well thank you very much, guys and gals.
Whilst the return of my funny may not have been accelerated one little bit, you've opened up the possibility of writing something bland and mirthless and yet still receiving a wave of sympathy stars.
I'm not proud, I'll play the Pity Card...

I do write a load of stuff that I never post, because I'm not happy with it, or it isn't working properly. Sometimes I go back to it, sometimes I just delete it. But by writing it, you kind of get into the habit, and it sparks off other ideas that might work better.
I think it's the discipline of writing regularly (at least daily) that gets the creativity flowing.
I've heard a news story about people panic-buying pasties. Maybe you could do something with that?

yeah just keep trying. i've had a few good ones recently but also plenty that just sunk without trace.
i've also debated whether some of my stories were actually funny enough to post, but one of those went to number 1, so you may as well try! it can sometimes be hard to remember why you found an idea funny after rereading it so many times

Hmm Mr duke maybe you could change your name and try out material in a different style, Sugartits is very popular so how about sweetwilly 69 and a regular update called a view from the bulge?
If that fails there is an operation to repair ones funny but it isn’t available on the national health, it is only available in a very expensive private hospital in California. Perhaps we could start fundraising to send you there? Charity record, telethon, jumble sale etc.
If that fails start several Alta egos and give yourself loads of positive comments, you won’t be any funnier but from the outside you will appear to be a comedy god.
Personally I don’t think you have lost it, it comes and goes like the tide. When it is out as far as it will go it can only be heading in one direction.

Have you considered going back to your previously excellent articles and updating them so that they are really unfunny, then adding the good stuff into newer subs? That way history will judge you as a constant improver.
I can't help but think my better days are behind me & I honestly think I may have had some sort of traumatic event in the last year or so which has caused some sort of humour rupture. I laughed at a scene in a harry potter film today ffs.
Keep it up & maybe start experimenting with different drugs.

When I first came here, I, like a lot of newbies, wrote about 20 FP subs in my first month. Only 1 was used and I became rather butthurt at what I felt was comedy gold being unappreciated by all you thoughtless, ignorant cretins. You'll all see, just you wait-
Ahem, but anyway now I simply turn up, sometimes after a few weeks and post one here and there. They still don't get as well received as I hope but... but nothing, that's it basically, they just don't get as well received as I hope.

Most people will say 'just keep writing'; I find the opposite works for me - it's all about ideas. I can go for months without writing anything - trying to force the funnies is an unsatisfying and frustrating business - so I just wait for inspiration to strike.
When I'm on a roll and my imagination is fired up I can rattle out post after post, but when the ideas aren't coming and/or I've turned my attentions to other hobbies (work, family etc.), I've found from bittter experience that it's just best to step back and not worry about it.
Eventually something presents itself and I decide to write a sub about it.

If you like an idea but it doesn't quite work, just leave it for a couple of months and then see if you can find a way of improving it. That sometimes works for me.
But JP's right, you can't magic up good ideas, and sometimes it just doesn't happen for a while.
