Brilliant cartoon - says it all really. Or actully, on second thoughts, the final punchline might have been done differently. Instead of "Maybe we can eventually make language a complete impediment to understanding", Calvin (or is it Hobbs? I never know) could have said:

"Maybe the eventuated outcome will be the impedimentationalising of the understand-mode of the languaging functionality to a totally complete degree."

Hobbes wouldn't say that. Calvin might. But not Hobbes.

I did once suggest to a Ph.D. student that his use of several nouns required de-verbing. Got a blank look in response.

Seymour, a man I know begins every sentence with "I must admit..."
Not particularly unusual, but after 15 minutes in a meeting with him, I feel like accusing him of various nefarious deeds just to hear him say "I must admit..."
'Are you Lord Lucan?'
'I must admit...' At which point armed cops burst out of a cupboard and arrest him; as he's dragged away, he screams "I'm not admitting anything!"

...and another thing that literally gets up my nose:

people who have learnt that you shouldn't say "You and me did X Y & Z" and so then proceed to say things like "he gave it to you and I"

Yes - pretty much any noun can be verbed. Table. Chair. Grass. Box. Pencil. Pen. Picture. Eye. Arm. Leg. Head.

But not anus, of course.

I often use the verb "arsed" more specifically "Can't be arsed", does that count?

That must have been when she was losing her hearing. John Brown reported that she was furious the day he said "I'm going to see your aunt tonight."
