Defending the ban, environmentalists are not only concerned about the discomfort of the hens, who lack a natural battery compartment, they point out that poultry carcases were being disposed of with the batteries still in place causing a landfill hazard.
Further support for the ban came from Tesco, Morrison's and ASDA who have been having to take steps to stop customers placing used poultry carcases in the battery disposal tubs in the foyer.
