Roger Lewis claims that older comedians: Carson, Dawson, Milligan etc were funny because they'd been in the armed forces and that comedians today aren't funny because they haven't.
I'm shocked that anyone can list Frank Carson with Spike Milligan and Les Dawson as if they were the same thing and not two men of genius and a prejudiced hack. But heigh ho that's just me.

I think he's wrong about the army (I know quite a few ex-forces who think they're funny, but are actually just institutionalised bell-ends). He's right about the 'new puritanism', though. Frankie Boyle is a good example: he does cross the line occasionally, but most of the time he doesn't.
The press (esp. the BBC and Guardian) LOVE pretending to be outraged when someone they disagree with politically says something they can interpret as 'offensive'. It drives me up the bloody wall, the po-faced, hypocritical, joyless little cock-weasels.

Les Dawson guarded Rudolf Hess at Spandau.
Can you imagine Hess seeing Dawson working through some of his routines and realising just what sort of master-race he'd lost to?
Oh, and by the way...Milligan- always struck me as looking at modern art- we're laughing / awestruck / interested because we feel we ought to be, rather than actually finding cows going pong in the ning nang nong anything more sensible than drivel

Milligan wrote most of the Goon shows, and his autobiographies from the war were breathtakingly good. For my money, he was the best comic writer Britain has ever had. He was just a fantastically engaging and funny man, even when he did Pob.
