New EU regulations banning the use of obscenities in personal and business names are unexpectedly causing chaos across the UK. Businesses and individuals across all walks of life are being forced to amend their names and branding to comply with the new rules.
Cosmo Smallpiece, managing director of Big Knockers (suppliers of premier door furniture since 1897) said, “This is a disaster for a small business such as ours: the amount of time and money we will have to spend on rebranding will seriously affect our profitability. We will also lose the significant amount of trade that we currently get from Google searches.”
As well as affecting the business sector, problems have also been reported within football (Arsenal, Arsene Wenger) and entertainment(Abi Titmuss, Alan Titchmarsh).
The Labour MP for Scunthorpe, Nicholas Dakin, has said he will be leading an appeal against the regulations.
Barclays Bank is currently seeking advice to see if they are likely to be affected by any future extensions to the regulations.
