A football pitch is exactly the size of one football pitch, scientists at London's Imperial College have discovered in groundbreaking research.
The frequent use of a 'football pitch' as a unit of measurement led researchers at Imperial College to examine football pitches throughout England and to check their findings against past measurements.
'We found that a football pitch measures exactly the same as one football pitch, while, surprisingly, three football pitches measure the same as three football pitches placed end to end,' said Dr Jonathan Watson of Imperial College's Department of Mathematics.
Dr Watson said his research confirmed the long held belief that the decommissioned aircraft carrier Ark Royal was indeed the length of three football pitches.
'Or,' he added, 'as we mathematicians would more precisely say, the length of forty-nine tennis courts.'
