It blurs the picture of what people find entertaining
Thanks
Probably need to thrash this one out, and eventually come to a consensus on this one.
but i dont!
the site itself suggests star rating criteria for what they mean-i think its
1=poor
2=works
3=good
4=great
5=fantastic!
if we all agree to use this it could help with the moderating!!!
Agree - we are all in the habit of 5* if we like it, otherwise nothing.
Personally, I hate it when people post 5 or 6 unfunny efforts all at once, chucking mud at the wall at all that.... just clogs up the board and moves some good subs onto page 2 where they get lost.
I agree. Rain or shine, we ought to be more discerning. We ought to find the time to use the system more accurately.
Speaking as a system addict, the slightest touch of cronyism makes me shudder. In fact, I can't wait another minute to go and vote properly.
Excellent post Sinnick, if it was in the other room I'd give it 5*...
I will try to only give something 5* if it actually makes me laugh. 4* if it just makes me smile. And 3* if it is an idea that has potential but needs better developing.
I won't bother with 1* and 2* as that feels mean.

Is it a bit like the badges if you work at Fatdonalds ?

Works for me too"
Works for me too VCG & Username. I must try harder (subs and starring)
Cheers, guys, 5* for each comment
I just find it annoying when the first 15 subs in the Writers' room are all credited with 5* - some of them are obviously shite and some are well worth reading
Mind you, if someone credited my subs with 5*, I wouldn't complain as much ...
I often say "Wonderful sub. Five Stars" and secretly just give them one or two. It doesn't work so well when I'm the first to rate a submission though.
I admit I am a bit lazy and only give 5 or nothing. I tend to only 5 star if I think it would work on the front page though. I will adopt the new system with immediate effect. Also agree with Charlie about posting loads of one liners all at once.
What the star system is missing is an ackowledgement that everyone elses stuff is average and all mine is bloody excellent.
Maybe I am simple, (and that is a huge possibility) but I either find something funny or I don't. I admit full subs either get 5 or 0, tickers will usually get 4 (as it is only one line,I think subs deserve the extra 1 for time and effort) unless they really make my laugh out loud, then its 5. only if I find something gratuitously offensive do I 1 star.
Agree with the point about loads of posts in a row. I can't fit any more 'fake ugg boots'in my closet
Perks - surely there's a difference between finding something funny and smiling as you read it, and finding something so funny that tea comes shooting out of your nose, eyes and ears?
I'm fully aware that limiting 5* ratings to "laugh out loud" subs means most of mine will never get above 4.
probably VCG. But I find it is either funny or not. I agree that there are differing levels of funny but if it elicits a reaction then it has done it's job. just because it didnt make me piss myself doesnt make it any less deserving of 5 because it still got a reaction. I will try to add to what i believe to be really good pieces by adding more than one word comments and highlight gems, and if I have suggestions I will suggest. For me, i look more at comments than ratings as they are more personnal.
I am sure this debate has been had before and happen again.
Zadock, it's ok, I got it.
And for that, I give you Five Star.
Are you suggesting we've plagiarised this topic? Because that's a whole different can of worms, as you're well aware...
Fair point. I take more from the comments than the ratings too. But maybe that's because people tend to give 5 quite a lot, so there is more indication in the comments as to just how much they like it.
The problem I've found in the past has been that I've been going through giving subs that I like 5*, then I'd find one that I thought was really, really, really great. Great concept, brilliantly written and hilariously funny. And suddenly only rating that the same as some of the others that I'd just given 5* to didn't seem right.
What I think we need is a 6* button for those occasions.
Jeni - I didn't get it. I've just read it again and I still don't. Any chance of explaining what it was?
Five Star VCG.
I'm looking forward to seeing them play at the Rewind Festival in Scone this summer, as there are now four girls and one boy since the member on the far left swapped sides.
Ah-ha, suddenly it makes sense.
In my defence, assuming the dates on wikipedia are correct, most of the songs very cleverly referenced by Zadok were released when I was 4...
vcg-im sure you could cope with the intellectual merit and symphonic resonance even though you were four
i think 5star were more lightweight than tamara ecclestones charity box
Stedman, I believe? My cousin bought me one of their singles from her first ever pay packet.
That's not in the remotest bit funny, I appreciate...but then that isn't really a criteria for posting that I've ever worked to.
Steadman, that's the chap!
Or not...
-sound of jaw hitting floor-
i cant believe you actually knew that, ID
I think this is exactly why most sites do numbers/scoring. Up Votes/ Down Votes. Youtube started 5 stars and ended up up/down. It is also easier.
If something is crap, and they care about comedy, then that down vote will help them...
I am not keen on upsetting people - so if it stinks, I tend not to vote at all rather than one starring.
Ah ha! Stupid name for a band.
Still having something of an ego I do like seeing 5 Big Ones awarded to any of my subs.
As an extreeeemly mature University student, many years ago now, I shuffled out of my tutor's room with 'only a B' grade for my first assignment(my last attempt at education had been decades earlier on City & Guilds Motor Mechanics course where you had a chance of getting a pass if you could both remember and spell your own name). The helpful marker had endorsed my essay with an opaque 6 word comment that didn't help very much at all in my search to improve.
Sorry long story. The point I was working up to is/was that I really appreciate comments on subs to explain scoring, query something, make suggestions etc. Having said that am aware that most people are quite busy (some even appear to have jobs allowing unfettered access to NB during the working day) and may not have the time.
in such cases I am prepared to accept unexplained 5 stars
