A 93 year old woman who inadvertently watched a whole episode of Celebrity Big Brother has claimed that it was 'the spirit of the blitz' that got her through her horrific ordeal.
Doris Riley is bed-ridden and lives in a care home. When one of her carers accidentally left the TV in her room on channel 5 she was forced to endure a whole episode of the show.
With the remote out of her reach Doris had no option but to watch 'celebrities', such as a woman who once slept with a footballer, a bloke who once walked past in the background of a news report, and somebody who has a beard that looks a bit like a beard that a suspect had in a 1997 Crimewatch re-enactment.
'It wasn’t pleasant, but I’ve lived through some bad times and used my experience to get me through.' said Doris, still clearly shaken by the incident.
'I remembered the times during the war, and how we would sit in our bomb shelter singing songs to try and stay positive, not knowing whether we’d make it through or what we’d find outside if we did. I just kept telling myself 'Watching this rubbish is bad, but it can’t last forever, I’ll be ok.' and I managed to get through it.'
After the carer in question realised what she had done she apologised profusely and immediately administered an emergency tape of Countdown in an attempt to calm the pensioner down.
When asked if she would now find herself hooked on Big Brother and watch further episodes of the series, Doris replied, 'No dear. I might be old, but I’m not retarded.'
