“It’s not a change from the World Service’s original remit - our job is to embody the freedoms enjoyed by Britain, and alongside democracy and social harmony is the freedom to trade in weapons." said a spokeman for the Department of Media and Culture. "So it’s only reasonable that listeners to the World Service in Russia or the Arab regions should hear commercials from international arms dealers. Similarly, Israel and Islamic countries should understand that freedom can sometimes mean radio ads for pork sausages, as well as informative programmes about the music of Madagascar."
