Intelligent machines may soon have the ability to wonder why they bother as scientists come close to reproducing the human genome for esteem.

This is a great story idea and well worth developing. Would ronseal or anyone else fancy developing it? Presumably it wouldn't be long before everyday appliances were complaining of feeling used and taken for granted, computers were apologising for errors saying 'It's not you, it's me', etc, etc.

SatNavs maybe a tad obvious but I'd appreciate it if mine was a little less certain about everything.
So, instead of "You have reached your destination." perhaps a more cautious
"err .... knowing me I may have misunderstood the postcode - as usual - but is this possibly where you want to be? You're so much better at map reading than me. What do you think?"
I'd certainly welcome my car apologising to me, even once, for engaging the 'traction control' and shutting off the power (again), just as I nip out of a side road in front of an overloaded skip lorry. Perhaps it could learn to respond to the swearing trucker and honking horn which inevitably follow.
Sorry, I may come back to this later if I get any better ideas.

I'm on for it.
Need to do a bit of work this morning.
I was thinking. Machine to Machine communications is one of the big growth areas in technology. Mobile broadband gives machines the chance to talk to each other everywhere and they can make more and more decisions for themselves.
But as soon as machines get intelligent, they're going to start diversifying into personality types. If I was a vending machine, in a sports centre, I'd really resent it if some uppity rack of servers on a data centre kept checking up on me. "How's your stock levels? Do you need replenishing. Don't let anyone tilt you." etc)
(that could be a question for psychologists. If you were a machine, what type of machine do you think you'd be)
