The rocky planet the same size as the Earth, which was today discovered orbiting a star like our sun, has proved on closer investigation to be a vast dumping ground for planetary rubbish.
High powered telescopes have discovered enormous quantities of nuclear waste, plastic bags and supermarket shopping trolleys.
Scientists believe the planet was inhabited in a similar way to earth many thousands of years ago, but was then abandoned once the amount of rubbish tipped the ecological balance and the planet could no longer sustain life.
A weak radio signal has been detected on the planet, thought to come from a continuous message generator left by the last inhabitants. Translators are working on interpretation of the message, and so far have succeeded in decoding the following:
'Can no longer survive on our once beautiful planet, ruined by pollution and over-exploitation of resources. However, we are heading for a "twin" planet of similar size: the third planet from the central star in the system named after our god "Dawkins".
'On our new planetary home we plan to start anew and not make the same mistakes again. We will cherish and care for our world. To any intelligent life discovering this message, we send our heartfelt greetings. There now follows a selection of the greatest artistic achievements of our civilization, starting with what was voted by our population as the most significant piece of music ever composed ON OUR PLANET....'
