The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, appeared genuinely angry in a TV interview at the weekend when asked about the unpopularity of Jeremy Clarkson. Mr Osborne was asked whether the public backlash against the aging Top Gear presenter, which has followed remarks he made on the BBC’s One Show, were justified. Osborne proceeded to complain about the unfairness of Clarkson’s “fly by night” unpopularity, saying: “This coalition government has cut services, cut pensions, increased the retirement age and laid off public sector workers. We have worked hard to earn and justify our unpopularity and it is hugely frustrating when some idiot from the telly just pops up and cynically steels our thunder.”
