People from all over Somerset have been flocking to a branch of Tesco’s in Burnham on Sea after the remains of a dead bird were found decomposing in a bag of pre-packed salad.
Queues waiting to get onto the car park stretched down to the promenade as excited shoppers joined in the carnival atmosphere.
‘Yes, the dead bird salad has been literally flying off the shelf’ said branch manager Vic Perret ‘finding a maggot filled body in your food might come as a surprise to some people but then I guess it’s what people have come to expect from their local Tesco. It’s a bit like the January sales only without the bargains.
I think word got round Somerset that we’ve not increased the cost of our pre-packed salad to cover the dead bird’.
Even though the rotting corpse was in an advanced skeletal state with little sign of any remaining flesh, shoppers said the dead creature would still make a welcome change from the ‘boring old slugs and snails’ they usually found in their local Tesco salad bar.
Arlene Jasper, a mother of four hoped that finding a rancid dead bird on the side of their plate just might encourage the kids to try the little green bits it came wrapped in.
But the carnival atmosphere was short lived when it was announced the salad bag promotion had been withdrawn due to overwhelming demand.
‘It’s disgusting’ said one angry pensioner ‘we’ve driven all the way from Bath just to get a rancid bag of salad and now they tell us they’ve sold out. It means we’ll have to go back to Lidl on the way home....they’ve got dead mice in their peanut butter spread but I’ll bet it’s all gone now’.
However, some shoppers were delighted with their trip to Tesco.
‘It’s a treat for the little ones’ said one happy shopper ‘Fridays we usually have Tesco’s own brand deep crust Pepperoni Pizza, so a mouthful of rotting bird feathers can only be a treat. With four kids to keep happy my biggest problem will be deciding which one of them gets the beak.
You wouldn’t happen to know if you can freeze rocket would you’?
