Stewart Lee speaks his brains on comedy, bravery and offensiveness and, in my opinion, speaks them well.
That Ricky Gervais as Derek clip is strange. It's difficult to work out what he's trying to do there other than be beastly about the learning disabled for no good reason. Anyone else find more to it than that?

Hmm, the Gervais thing is a bit uncomfortable, and I'm normally quick to defend him.
But then, I can't really bring myself to ever agree with Stewart Lee, even when he's right. He's just too smug.

I consider Gervais to be a one trick pony. It's always a socially-inept, pitiable, dislikeable character who is the main focus of his 'comedy', and I am bored by him.
I haven't seen anything recent of Lee's so can't comment, and perhaps it's just me being dim, but I thought it was actually a fairly muddled and weak article, although the emails from Norris McWhirter were a little amusing.
This is a perennial debate though, and one which I don't think there is a single, conclusive answer.

I like Stuart Lee.
It seems he can argue for and against a subject within the same sentence but you are never quite sure which one he is advocating.
Which makes you have to make up your own mind - which a lot of people are uncomfortable with.
He's very clever at twisting observations around.
Maybe I'm looking for things that aren't there - this article is a prime example. In my eyes it appears to be pro-Gervais, right up until the last few sentences when he points out that special needs kids would probably prefer not to have twats following them round the supermarket giving them grief.
But if it does happen then it's OK 'cos (in the name of comedy) Ricky Gervais gave it the green light once again.

I'm very pro Stewart Lee. He toys with your brain.
I was lucky enough to have got tickets to see him record some of his TV show earlier this year. Two solid hours of sharp incisive stand up.

I think Stewart Lee is very, very good - I laughed at fist of fun all those years ago, and have seen him live a few times in recent years. But, I also like Ricky Gervais in dollops - Extras was very funny. And Macintyre makes me laugh as well. How unnaceptable that there would some kind of broad appeal to comedy these days.....

Now there's a thought Charlie - what about developing the idea of opening a "Comedy Boutique" to cater to all tastes by offering bespoke jokes? Cheap racism is, well, cheap, whereas comedy around the inconguety of electron orbitals in chlorine would be expensive. Whaddaya think?

I believe it was Mr Lee's 'fist of fun' that ran screen flashes of funniness that you could only read by videoing the programme and pausing it.
Our family didn't own a video, bizarrely I got teased about that at school by a few little shits, and so, therefore and ergo, I hated Lee and Herring for facilitating my bullying.
