“We’ve won SH73 6PN, which is in Barnsley. And frankly, it’s a dump, and I don’t mean any disrespect to people who live in Barnsley.” So says Frank Shepherd, this week’s postcode lottery winner. “There’s a half abandoned industrial estate, a load of run down flats, a motorway flyover, a bit of scrubby land that you couldn’t build on, and a housing estate like in Shameless. And it’s ours. Not only is it worth nothing. I’ve just found out we actually have to pay money to some redevelopment quango to keep it going. I’m ruined, and it’s all because of a 50p scratchcard.”
“We went in for it because we read in the Mail about a couple who won a postcode near Reading with a Spearmint Rhino and a TK Maxx on it” said Frank’s wife, Reena. “Tescos were begging them to let them build a hypermarket. I mean, we didn’t expect to win a Mayfair postcode, I mean that’s only once in a blue moon. But we had to go up there and have our photo taken with Brian Conley, and we couldn’t find anywhere that didn’t look like a dump, and he was due to be in Chesterfield for rehearsals of Babes in the Wood with Linda Bellingham and in the end we had our picture done inside a little Chef and you can see he doesn’t look happy. Now I know what they mean. It really is a postcode lottery.”

offlineMemberAs a proud Yorkshireman getting our glorious postcodes wrong is in itself an insult. Worthy of a Yorkshire Fatwa - especially as I grew up in S73 - and I can indeed confirm it is a shitehole. Did you know its where the 1984 Miner's strike actually started and ended.
