The Nigerian government has warned its elderly citizens about a rash of e-mail scams originating in the Isle of Wight. ‘Many of our honest Nigerian pensioners have lost their life savings, falling victim to the clever schemes of British scam artists, including members of a cutthroat Shanklin gang,’ noted the Nigerian Minister of Justice. ‘Especially sad is the case of an 84-year-old Nigerian pensioner, who divulged his bank account information to help transfer blocked funds from some chap who had a very authentic-looking Ministry of Defence business card. Not only did the promised funds transfer never arrive, but this poor old fellow found that his life savings had disappeared. Worse still, he borrowed from relatives to meet the gentleman at the Owl and Monkey Haven, deep in the Island’s interior beyond the rule of law, and we fear abduction. The ruthlessness of local inhabitants, many of whom feign frailty with wheelchairs and walking sticks as props, is not to be underestimated.’
