It has been the dressed-down garment of cool for over five years. Along with the big screen, the echoey venue and the use of the words “here’s the thing that makes this thing so cool”, it’s the must have item for every tech product presentation. But now, according to a scientific survey, a black turtle neck sweater, actually increases its wearer's creativity.
Mike Jepson, second year student at the University of Rotherham (formerly South West Yorkshire Technical College) and five of his friends all wore the item for four weeks. “In that time I got a great idea for an electric shaver which you can dictate notes to? Another of my friends had the idea of a voice-recognition hat? And my friend Stan says his song writing is way better? And here’s the way cool thing: My mum, sorry my ma – who is not really creative – wore a BTS for the study, and now she feels ready to experiment with chickpea -based recipes. And that’s, like a first?”
Meanwhile a control group from Rotherham U who wore hoodies, T shirts with slogans, and non-black turtlenecks did not increase their creativity during the same period. “They didn’t even have ideas for hand driers or get better at computer games?” said Mike Jepson. He is about to submit the data produced by his study to his tutor, Mr Phillips, and secure its validity by publication on the Rotherham student website Rot.on.com
He says after eight weeks - double the survey time - of nonstop BTS wear, day and night, he is considering buying a second identical black turtleneck. “I had the idea that if I had two black turtles, some of my laundry and hygiene issues could be addressed at the same time. I could wear one and wash the other, sometimes simultaneously. And the thing that is way cool is that hey! I don’t think I would have had that idea, if I had not worn the black turtleneck sweater in the first place? Which kind of proves my point even more?”
