And how would you explain this to an extra terrestrial? A "band" makes some "music," brings out an "LP" with them on the "cover" on a "pedestrian crossing" in "London." "42" Earth years later, "humans" still risk death having their "photographs" taken on the same "crossing" (or "crosswalk" as they say in the "USA.")

I'm not a physicist, but the TV signal from their first TV broadcast will have reached 48 light years into the universe by now...
Given the scale of the universe, this isn't very far really.
I don't understand the idea of a single point as being the source of a signal. Because the further it travels, doesn't it get really spread out? Maybe getting a bit, well, thin?

The first signal will now be spread over an area of nearly 30,000 square light years and will have passed through a volume of just over 450,000 cubic light years. Hope that helps.
Coverage could be much greater if you allow for short cuts through higher dimensions.

The most hilarious thing about the crossing is that it is not the one featured on the Abbey Road album cover. It was moved by a few metres several years ago for safety reasons. It has since been given grade 2 listed status and it isn't even the original crossing.
Bit of a farce really.
Is there mileage in a sub about this? People going to great lengths to recreate the photo with themselves in it, by buying the original cars that were parked there, getting the same clothes, and growing a beard.
Probably not.
And on the subject of how you'd explain it to an extra-terrestrial, 2 words:
People are stupid.
Whats brilliant is that as people cross trying to get the perfect posture for the photo, they look like they have been to the ministry of funny walks
Although I can't laugh at these people. I have drowned 4 children trying to emulate the Nivana Nevermind album cover

When you stated "this is fascinating", I was certain that it was a picture of my ----.
When you mentioned Americans calling it a "crosswalk", I remembered being very young and not knowing what the hell "Ped X-ing" painted on the street might mean. My older brothers were (and still are) such a--holes, I knew never to ask them. They would have undoubtedly called me "Peddy" for the rest of my life for asking a simple question. I am saddled with thirty nicknames as it is.
