As the Jobless figures increase, this has been partially offset by the increase in the number of people employed to count them. A recently employed spokesman for the unemployment registry said "I was an unemployed bean counter for ages, then They took me on to count the has-beans. I was delighted, I just love to count, I will count anything including the unemployed (not counting myself now of course)."
As the upward trend in unemployment continues, so will the rise in counters.
Theoretically, unemployment could never reach 100% because it would take 50% to count the 50% unemployed and an equilibrium would be reached.
Ed Microband has suggested that we employ counters to count the Employed instead, but the disadvantage with this is that with employment falling, then counters would need to be laid off & then counted by the other lot of counters.
This could be counterproductive, or more precisely counter-counterproductive.
As proper employment begins to rise again, unemployment counters could be retrained in the art of subtraction as well as addition, so they can count employment. They also might come up with an estimated guess of the population.
