The Atacama large milllimetre/submillimetre array (ALMA) in Chile is the largest, most complex telescope ever built. The director of the telescope has optimistic expectations: "ALMA will be able to see object 13 billion light years from Earth. Finally, it may be possible to see the end of the economic crisis."
Chancellor George Osborne congratulated the team behind ALMA but commented, "my forecast is that the end of the crisis is 11 billion years away, 12 billion tops."
