Michael Gove has shown his enthusiasm for the teaching of languages by promoting the teaching of english as a modern foreign language in selected primary schools.
'Some schools have pupils who know that their teachers are talking a kind of sense, but not anything like the sense they hear at home. Let's teach these pupils good english first and move on to the more traditional French or Welsh when they have a firm grasp of the the basics. Otherwise they'll never have the chance to enjoy Shakespeare, Milton or the Bible, let alone Sartre or the Mabinogion'.
