I tried to get a new google email thing set up and found that the last step seemed to be entering my mobile phone number. I gave up at that point.
I'm sure that the good people of google mean no harm and are far too busy sitting on their ethically sourced beanbags, planting trees in second life to offset the virtual CO2 caused by their virtual hipster purchases, drinking mocha-frappa-skinny-lite coffees, and helping the chinese gather data on insurgents... sorry where was I, they're too busy doing all those things to call me up in the middle of the night and ask me why their search engine isn't my home page... but the fact that they could do this filled me with the fear.
I very much dislike Google, Apple, Adobe, and Java for keeping on popping up on my computer and asking if I want to update stuff or check for updates. I did find settings to say do not ask me ever again, but these seem to keep being ignored by those 4. At least MS don't badger me with innane update requests, as mrsall1word keeps saying, once a year is plenty.
Pretty sure that the internet is to blame for all of this. My plans to build a rival internet are going slowly - when it's ready I'll let you all know.
