...it looks like the SNP Scottish Govt are trying to either close or merge my Uni with another, much bigger and far more impersonal one.

I'm hugely opposed to this, as are the vast majority of students and staff. We CHOSE to attend a smaller Uni, where the staff actually get to know the individual, and provide a more tailored learning experience. It's a brilliant wee place, and a leading light in Forensics and Computing.

I'd be extremely grateful if you could take the time to sign the petition.

    Thanks all,

    Jeni

Where is the petition? - I might even "come out" as a senior academic. This kind of homegenisation is the same as supermarkets taking over the high street.

wow is this the price you lot north of the border have to pay for free uni places?
Good luck with the campaign, my mothers former employers, a college in Leeds struck out on their own when the Learning and skills council decided to try and merge all the further education colleges in Leeds under one umbrella as Leeds City College about 3 years ago, earlier this year they merged with them after government funding cuts meant it was no longer viable to go it alone. Despite reports to the contrary admin and teaching jobs were lost, my mothers among them after over 20 years of service to the college in all manner of roles.
    Like I say good luck

Brings to mind the worst excesses of the French Revolution. Make lemonade out of lemons. Maybe the big Uni looks better on a resume (unless it's Lampeter).

    Jeni,
Last time I did this the bloke was put to death within a few hours.
So exactly where does Alex Salmond stand on the death penalty for Scottish students.
Too late anyway – I signed the petition - but then went into a blind panic when they asked for donations

Jeni, I don't know the situation there whatsoever, but maybe I can suggest a few things:

    (1) The vast majority of mergers in all sectors fail, apparently (2) Student opinion will not count for much as they will have left by the time the process is over in ~3 years (3) University funding is in a desperate state and they'll be looking to save money by combining facilities, scrapping inefficient facilities, promoting successful facilities on the world stage etc (4) There may be some extra Govt funding to enhance the combined University to make it more elite - that's the way it works at the moment (5) Research funding will be a major factor in any decision (6) The staff will be more apprehensive than you because they will be subject to change possibly for the worse, but maybe for the better if they're up to it (7) You don't know what the alternative to merger is - what if it Abertay were shut down completely ?

So, it's not necessarily a bad thing, but again I don't know the specific facts where you are

Are you seriously asking English people to become involved in what is an entirely Scottish affair? Don't you know where this will end?

I didn't realise this was an English people only site John.

I was merely asking some on-line cyber-friends to add their names in support of something that is important to me, and thousands of other people.

I'm not telling anyone to sign, just politely asking.
And since I wouldn't include you in the grouping of 'on-line cyber-friends', consider yourself exempt.

Jeni - either he's taking the piss, you are taking the piss, both of you are taking the piss or neither of you is taking the piss.

Such are the vagaries of the interwebthingy....

I've added our sigs to the petition Jeni, not many on it yet so I hope you all get the support you need. Son is at Stirling Uni and I'd hate to think the students following him could be put through this!

I was being semi-serious. Do Scots want English people to participate in decisions made in Scotland? Because the last x hundred years of history don't suggest that that's a good idea.

I appreciate the situation but really and truthfully the doings of Scots academia are non of my business.

Perhaps in the absence of tuition fees, economies must be made, and this merger is part of that?

In England, tuition fees are vital to preserve the standards of University education, apparently...whilst in Scotland, they are not.

Someone needs to learn something from someone then...
