For someone who likes to preach to the rest of us what is suitable for joking about, Rikkor, you have some nerve. Still, it's the Deep South and the judicial murder of the first convenient black man you can get your hands on is a bit of a tradition there eh? Ha bloody ha.

This doesn't bother me at all, but I'm afraid it will have to go on your record next time we play our 'what can you joke about' parlour game.

I saw a picture of the Georgia state pardon board yesterday. Looks about 50% African American. Sorry. This is what happens to cop killers.

Lawrence Russell Brewer, on the other hand, was executed on Wednesday and no one objected. Personally I think they should have publically castrated him (Brewer) first.

It's only to be expected that Rikkor should be dogmatic.

Lawrence Russell Brewer was quite obviously guilty. That's the difference.

What I wanted to ask is:-
is this Troy Davis a case of

    1) he actually didn't do it, or is it a case of
    2) he did do it, but some of the witnesses were dodgy types and so anti-death penalty people are making a fuss?

I'm sorry if the answer is in a newspaper somewhere...I try to get the gist of the news by deduction from the NewsBiscuit writers' room most of the time, but this one has me stumped...

    Thanks

    or:

    3) he didn't do it, but he did do something else which they'd already executed somebody for, so it's a kind of criminal justice karma thing.

Must get new specs. I thought this said; ‘Tory Davis Left Me His "Guns And Ammo” Subscription'. He’d do anything to annoy Cameron.

Must've done it. American justice is the best in the world and never gets it wrong, just ask OJ, and Michael Jackson (admittedly a tad difficult unless you use a ouija board)

Why didn't the cop just shoot him at the time?

American justice is indeed the best money can buy. NewsThump beat us to it on this one, see below:

Georgia executes man they’re pretty sure did it

The American state of Georgia last night executed Troy Davis, after last-minute appeals were rejected because the state was still pretty sure he killed an off-duty policeman in 1989.

A world-wide human rights campaign was seeking a reprieve for Davis, but it was ultimately unsuccessful due to lots of pretty strong gut feelings about the whole thing among Georgian officials.

A state spokesperson said, “Troy Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 this evening after everyone involved in prosecuting the case admitted they were really quite confident that he did it.”

“This sends out a clear message that we will use the fullest extent of the law if we ever have reason to believe that you might have killed a policeman.”

“Of course this case was proved beyond reasonable doubt, it’s just that reasonable doubt means something a bit less here.”

“For example, we’re all convinced there’s an invisible sky fairy looking after us. And yes, we kill people in the name of the law.”

    Troy Davis executed
Pro-death penalty activists celebrated the execution, claiming it showed that Georgia is no soft touch when it comes to making tough decisions about things it is reasonably sure about.

Cletus Michaels told us, “The message is clear, we have the death penalty so don’t give us reason to think you might have done something bad.”

“What we have here is a lot of important people being pretty sure about something, and taking appropriate action. How can that possibly be a bad thing?”

The last time anyone was hanged in Britain was in 1964. The two men in question - they were bang to rights BTW - committed a murder in April, were arrested in May, tried in June, had their appeals dismissed in July and were hanged in August.

Modern America keeps people in jail under the shadow of death for an absolute minimum of five years and usually well over ten, 22 in this case, THEN puts them to death, by which time they have inevitably become different people. Even more revolting than having the death penalty in the first place.

Why should shooting an off-duty cop be any more serious than shooting anyone else?

The shooter wouldn't have necessarily known he was a cop.
