Health Minister Andrew Lansley received a warm reception from opticians yesterday when he demanded eye tests become more difficult. Inspired by Michael Gove's call for harder GCSEs, Lansley hit out at easy-to-remember sequences and oversized letters. "Everyone knows the eye test always starts with the letter 'E' giving patients a head start." he told a conference of dispensing opticians. We are suggesting that gets changed, without warning, to 'J'.
"The net result will be fewer unfinished Daily Telegraph crosswords and growth - more sales of those expensive, black rimmed glasses that make everyone under thirty look like Ronnie Barker" he said. However not all opticians had faith in Lansley's reform. Benjamin Stark, an optician from Stroud said the idea "could make things better, worse or just the same. Better. Worse. Or just the same."
