Self-powered vehicles are set to become commonplace on the British Rail network. Hammond describes the new proposals as "exciting" in the Governments latest money saving suggestions for commuters. When questioned on the viability of the scheme he said, " you would be surprised, comparative tests on the West Coast Main Line have shown that journey times using the new vehicles are remarkably similar to the express trains which were run behind the new vehicles on the same track at the same time".
