What was meant as a solemn tribute ended in musical chaos, when the minute’s silence honouring the dead of 9/11 was marred by sound engineers playing a tape of the Minute Waltz. Instead of the traditional coughing and distant traffic noise associated with minutes’ silences, viewers and listeners the world over were treated to a rendition of Mozart's Waltz in D flat major, Op 64, No. 1, popularly known as the Minute Waltz, and also Valse du petit chien, after a technical mix up. There was further condemnation when President Obama’s address contained two repetitions and a deviation, but relatives of the dead said their loved ones “would have understood”. Nicholas Parsons said he could keep the subject.
