Red faced officials from New York’s Port Authority have called a halt to redevelopment on the site of the new World Trade Centre in Manhattan after realising contractors had started building the $3billion complex in the wrong place.
The Port Authority heading up the project only became aware of the oversight when 12 year old Hiroko Kiormi - son of an IT consultant from Tokyo - pointed out that ground-zero was actually about four blocks away from where construction was currently taking place.
It was on an early morning boat trip around lower Manhattan that Hiroko approached tour operator Vanda Marling and explained that the original Twin Towers had been located just a little bit further down the street, next to Wayne’s All-Nite Diner and not on the site where the new complex was currently taking shape.
A quick look at the planning applications and 5 minutes spent on Google Earth was all it took for 1WTC consultants Durtz to realise why construction on the Manhattan Memorial Garden had been proving such a logistical nightmare.
The 1WTC reconstruction was actually taking place on a corner plot earmarked for a drive-thru Wendy’s Bar ‘n Grill and was never intended for a four towered 52 storey transit centre designed to accommodate 250,000 people a day.
Work on the multi billion dollar project was stopped immediately and development of the corner plot handed over to Wendy contractors Gubbins and Wonford who promised they would try their best to incorporate the 5 acre marble plaza - already built by the WTC contractors - into their plans.
‘We only had plans for a 20 seat restaurant with a Chucklebuttie play area’ said Hal Fischer of G&W....’I guess if we tweak it a little here and there we could make it 9020...but the Freedom Fountain is gonna have to go.....they put it right where the chocolate-chip cookie monster was going to have his cookie cave ’.
Consultants for Durtz think the error may have occurred after plans drawn up for the iconic US complex - which had been outsourced to a construction firm in Beijing – had come back written entirely in Chinese.
‘I guess me and Marv are gonna have to lay off those 3000 construction workers we got lined up for the Wendys contract’ sighed Fischer ...’something in the back of my mind told me this ain’t right...I kept tellin’ Marv none of the other Wendy’s has an observation deck on the 50th floor, a 15 pad heliport or a parking booth for the President.
Do any of you guys need plans for a drive-thru World Trade Centre?
