Following his team's defeat in the Carling Cup last night, Swindon manager Paolo di Canio is shocked that English footballers will not go down theatrically under the slightest challenge. The colourful but controversial Italian fascist is trying to coach the Swindon players in the skills and artistry that were part of his game but admits that he is finding it difficult.
His frustration is particularly aimed at new signing Leon Clarke who last night withstood a barrage of shoving and shirt-pulling but refused to take a dive.
"It’s annoying when my players stay on their feet,” Mr. di Canio said. “In my day, any contact at all would cause a good rolling around in faked agony. Even a gentle push could send someone reeling backwards for several steps before collapsing amusingly."
