I was always taught that if the last letter was 's', then there was no need for an additional 's'.

Therefore - James';Elvis' etc.

According to my Clever Dicks' Guide to Punctuation you punctuate as you say it, so you'd have Dickens' book but Elvis's hamburger. I bet I needed a semicolon in the middle, there, but I can't handle them.

1)Thanks for the assorted punctuation tips. I've tended to use Jeni's approach to date but am attracted to Greg's Dick idea. And I've never really understood the semi-colon (semicolon?? see what I mean?) so I just park them where I think that the text could do with a bit of a pause.

One rule about semi-colons. You can't use one if the first word after the semi-colon is "but", "and", and such. In that case, just make two separate sentences.

Seriously (sorta) in some parts of the world colonel must be as high in middle management a career officer can get without being in the ruling party/family/clique. Maybe mutiny is the only career option for some people.

the biggest problem failing to promote himself will come to light when he tries to negotiate his final salary pension sheme with the US.
