Racist homophobes' newspaper of choice, The Daily Mail, is at the centre of yet more Twitter outrage today after it suggested in an article that King of Twitter, Stephen Fry, is frankly rather boring.
In a scathing piece the paper slams many of Fry's 'tweets' as being inane and pointless, and goes on to say that it's a wonder his followers don't die from sheer tedium and abject boredom when reading his timeline. It quotes one of Fry's tweets in particular to make its case. "Oh bums and fishooks! M'chum Hugh Laurie's on Later With Jools Holland and I'm busy doing a voiceover for Waitrose. Damn!"
But users of the popular social networking site have come to the hoity-toity funnyman's defence, by getting the hashtag #DailyMailisShite trending across the world. One Tweeter, @Sadknobend, summed up the mood in this tweet: "Stephen is really fab and we all love him #DailyMailisShite"
The Oscar Wilde-playing thespian was believed to have been on the point of quitting Twitter for at least the third time, until he was persuaded by his legions of followers to stay on. He later tweeted: "So touched by all your wonderful support. Am deeply humbled. SF. #DailyMailisShite"
Another tweeter who asked for their identity to be kept secret said. "Stephen's great, and following him really makes me believe that I have some kind of personal relationship there. I know if I was ever in a fix, say maybe I owed money to Loan Sharks or something like that, then all I would have to do is DM him (send a Direct Message for non Twitter users) and I could be sure of some help and support. No doubt in my mind whatsoever."
Charlie Sheen, rumoured to be about to enter the revamped Celebrity Big Brother house, has been conspicuously quiet on Twitter throughout the furore, and this has led to speculation by high-tech commentators that the troubled former Two and a Half Men star is biding his time and waiting to assume Fry's position as King of Twitter at the earliest possible opportunity.
