We have them all the time here, usually after sporting events or floods (looting). It's just that America is so vast, they always seem rather spread out over space and time. Won't help your tourism too much.

It reminds me of the song 'Warriors of Genghis Khan' by spoof rock group 'Bad News'. The lyrics were as follows:
"Burning, looting, raping and shooting.
Burning, looting, raping and shooting.
Burning, looting, raping and shooting.
'Cos I'm a warrior of Genghis Khan,"It is sadly now so real.

It clears out slow-moving stock, though. Apparently HMV have asked looters to limit themselves to 30 or 40 Coldplay CDs each.

Don't panic Rikkor, it's all just part of a Government sponsored eighties revival. We've already got the recession, rocketing unemployment – and to all intents and purposes - a Conservative government in place. Give it a couple of months, and it'll all be back to The Thompson Twins, Howard Jones, shoulder pads and Yuppies again.

Looters and rioter are very pesky. I've been forced to abandon my supermarket shop and rely on local stores for groceries and gin after the local high road was under lock down at short notice.
Still trying to get my head around why shit is happening - I know that a lot of people round here do really hate the police and do really like new trainers... but that's sort of always been the case.Anyway - cheers rikkor - maybe we can re-brand our dear capital?
"Visit London, the hotels might be fucking pricey, but the shopping's a steal"
"Bored of Detroit? why not visit London."

Probably will affect the tourism, in truth, since Americans are too thick to realise that Tottenham is quite some way from Park Lane.

Adrian J - try Rewind at Henley on the 19th, you'll have the complete return to the 80s.

Oxy, you should update your references. A lot of Americans under 70 want to go to places in London that are more Brixton-y than Park Lane-y. A whole new world, even for the thick.

Hey Jeni, it's one of the more civilised events staged here. Great fun.
