Popular motoring presenter Richard Hammond is to be accidentally killed in a tragic ratings-boosting episode of Top Gear to end the current series. Exact details have yet to emerge although the sequence, which producers deny is a stunt, will be followed by a light hearted item in which "reasonably priced cars" are converted into modern looking hearses and funeral vehices to be used in a tribute to Hammond.
A BBC spokesman agreed there were health and safety concerns over the sequence in which "the Hamster" meets his death. "However we have been reassured by the producers that the sequence poses no threat to the public. No flash photography will be involved. This is typical of the kind of edgy ironic style for which the programme has become justly famous."
Hammond, who came close to death in 2006 said he was happy with the plans and admitted there had been tough negotiations on an extra fee for the episode. Jeremy Clarkson is a key member of the Chipping Norton Anti Virus set, now enmired in the phone hacking scandal. He is believed to have come up with the idea, despite being under enormous pressure in his private life. He is facing charges for parking next to the Cenotaph and scrawling 'I love you Rebekah' on it as well as smoking what insiders call "Nissan Leaf". His Sunday Times column will continue to be ghosted by Rowan Atkinson.
