Dozens of celebrities faced mounting criticism today for failing to make trite comments about Amy Winehouse via various social networks.
“It’s almost as if they think their opinions don’t matter,” said 19-year-old Chardonnay Griffin from Basingstoke.
Stephen Fry tweeted “Amy’s death is nothing to do with me” while Lily Allen commented “why would anybody be interested in my banal observations?”
Politicians including David Cameron, Nick Clegg and that geeky bloke who’s something to do with the Labour Party have maintained a respectful silence in case they look like they’re indulging in a sordid brawl for votes over the cold dead corpse of somebody famous.
But critics are angry at the dignified restraint being shown by celebrities.
Nick Lawn, a sales executive for newsprint manufacturers, said: “These people are neglecting their duty at a time of national tragedy, which is to pointlessly fill acres of newspapers and chock up the internet with their repetitive, nauseating hand-wringing.”
And backbench Tory MP Sir Bufton Tufton said angrily: “If David Cameron wants to avoid looking ridiculous trying to be down with the kids on the street that’s his business, but it’s not the sort of behaviour we want in the Conservative Party. I think I’ve got that right.”
Meanwhile, the Catholic Church has announced it is to fast-track the canonisation of Amy Winehouse.
The Church’s spokesperson on youth affairs, Father Snoop Dogg, said: “We’ve just found out Amy wasn’t a drink-sodden junkie battling terrible addictive disorders while serving as a national figure of fun for the callous bastards in the tabloid press at all, but actually a genius whose tragic death has left a huge gap in many people’s lives.”
