The News of the World has admitted an "error of judgment" in choosing to apologise to the Dowler family for hacking into their daughter's voicemail by breaking into their house and leaving a note and a box of chocolates on the kitchen worktop.
"With hindsight we should have left the card and gift on the door step" said a spokesman. "Besides, we didn't exactly break in - we still had a copy of their key from the original police investigation".

"With hindsight we should have known no-one was in when we called. Mrs Dowler has book club, and Mr Dowler his 'special interest' evening class - taught by Nancy from our newsdesk. Talk about coincidence! And we could have checked our CCTV network to be sure. After all that, we should have just left the card and gift" etc etc original punchline
