Maria Sharapova, former Wimbledon champion, has blamed her loss of form in this year’s Ladies’ Final on laryngitis. She was beaten in 2 sets by new girl on the block, Petra Kvitova. She told Sue Barker that “my serve was playing up a bit but the rest of my game was OK – my forehands, backhands, volleys and even the occasional lob seemed to be working. However, I had a bit of a sore throat and just couldn’t get my scream to full volume and so wasn’t able to put off my opponent as effectively.”
She also told Sue that she hadn’t taken Lemsip as she wasn’t sure if it would pass the stringent drugs test.
