Responding to recent criticism that Midsomer Murders features only white middle class characters and an unrealistic spectrum of criminal activity ranging from ‘murder’ to ‘murder’, the producer has pooh-poohed accusations of racism and outlined his plans for the future direction of the series. “We will be introducing a guest criminal in each episode” he said. “The new series will open with a brutal mugging of a little white haired old lady by a Jamaican gentleman. Subsequent episodes will feature Albanian sex traffickers, a Chinese Triad drug operation and Nigerian internet fraudsters, culminating in a massive explosion orchestrated by a joint Pakistani-Iranian-Yemeni Islamist terror organisation” He concluded “I’m sure this will dispel any crass stereotyping and demonstrate our recognition that every nation and ethnicity has an important role to play in rural life in the UK. Moreover, we’re toying with the idea of having a foreign lead detective. I’m thinking Belgian, boy reporter, dog, impeccable attitude towards diversity. We could call him TanTan, or possibly TonTon”
